Can Small Schools Let Go of Their Safety Blankets

Author:
Denise Stone

The size of a school can play a major role in determining the type of education a child receives. School systems are forever looking for the proper balance between too many and too few students. Both cases can adversely affect the learning process, yet most people are unaware of what exactly the problem is that students and faculty face in a small town.

Books for Bucks

Author:
Brian Ramsey

The Boston College bookstore in the McElroy building is the central retail center for the university's entire campus. The crowded little store carries basically everything that a student living on campus would ever need. Whether it is a shirt from the large selection of BC clothing, some notebooks from the array of school supplies, a fold-up lounge chair decorated in the school's colors, a magazine, a pack of gum, or simply a few books that all students are required to purchase, the bookstore has it in stock -- it is the Wal-Mart of Boston College.

Jane Eyre and Jane Rochester: The Struggle for Sanity

Author:

A person will worship something, have no doubt about that. We may think our tribute is paid in secret in the dark recesses of our hearts, but it will out. That which dominates our imaginations and our thoughts will determine our lives, and our character. Therefore, it behooves us to be careful what we worship, for what we are worshipping we are becoming. -- Ralph Waldo Emerson

A New Horizon

Author:
Melissa Roberts

There is a place in this world where you can feel the thunderheads rolling in before you can see or hear them. There's a subtle but electrifying energy in the ground, a vibration that only a runner can sense. As 83rd Street rushes by under my sneakers, I can feel myself getting closer to this place where the concept of unity with nature is a reality. In this place your past is closer to the present than you could ever believe and your future is yours to catch. This place is my truly my home.

Tidal Dreams

Securely tied to a pier in an all-but-dead historical port, she rested. My second home. My favorite home. Waves lapped gently at her hull. Sun glistened on her spray-soaked bow. Keona. For me, she was more than a boat. She was a refuge, a fortress, a cozy hideaway from all my problems, a dry haven in the incessant Seattle rain.
