One of Boston's Best Kept Secrets

Author:
Elisa DeMarco

"It's a place for nostalgic connection. People come for spirituality and religion: mass, communion, a sacramental life--but also for connecting to the past," explained Father Claude Scrima of St. Leonard of Port Maurice Parish. A friendly, older priest with an Italian accent, he speaks fondly of this magnificent church and its long tradition.

Masculinity, Homosexuality, and Military Assimilation in Top Gun

Author:
Charlie Engle

Top Gun delivered a high-octane injection into mid-1980s society at precisely the right historical moment. Geopolitically, the United States fought covertly against Communism's latest manifestations in Central America while its image still retained the scars of Vietnam. Recruitment, subsequently, remained stagnant through this time period as the Navy and other branches of the United States military grasped desperately for a striking image. Enter Maverick, the enigmatic embodiment of a range of desired American values.

Fourteen Thousand Miles from Home

Author:
Mairead Townley

Coming from Nebraska, I never thought that a Xeroxed paper of instructions entitled “How to Eat a Lobster” would carry much significance in my college life. It’s funny to think that this set of directions has come to roughly symbolize my first couple weeks at Boston College. Looking at it takes me back through the daunting process of reestablishing myself in a new atmosphere. It served as a barrier-breaker between me and the other girls on my floor, and essentially began the basis of our relationship with one another.

A Pair of Legs, A Football, and Blows to the Head

Author:
Greg Hassel
"Shit."

Lying in a hospital bed, something was wrong again.

My eyes decided to open, but blinking did not make the hospital room disappear, nor did it awaken me from the dream I hoped to be in. Something was definitely wrong again.

The situation seemed clear, but the conclusion remained cloudy. Switching from calm to panic mode seemed inevitable when seeing my shirt cut in half, clothes dirtied, and arms unable to move. Then, my brain started to work again, and I slowly remembered.
